The Theth to Valbona hike is legendary, but getting to Theth is an adventure in itself. This is where your 4x4 from Adventure Albania becomes your most valuable asset. Here's a complete guide on how to plan the trip.
The Challenge: Getting to Theth
The road from Shkodër to Theth has been improved, but it's still a demanding mountain pass. While parts are asphalted, the final stretch can be challenging, especially after bad weather. A 4x4 gives you the confidence and capability to navigate this stunning drive safely, allowing you to stop for photos whenever you want without worrying about getting stuck.
The 4x4 Advantage: Our Route Plan
We recommend a 3-day loop for this adventure, combining the hike with the Komani Lake Ferry.
Day 1: Shkodër to Theth
- Pick up your Mitsubishi Pajero in Tirana and drive to Shkodër (approx. 2 hours).
- Stock up on supplies in Shkodër.
- Begin the 2.5-3 hour 4x4 drive to Theth. Take your time, enjoy the views from Qafa e Thores (Thore Pass).
- Set up your rooftop tent at a campsite in Theth or check into a local guesthouse.
Day 2: The Hike
- Leave your vehicle safely parked in Theth.
- Start the 6-8 hour hike over the Valbona Pass (1800m). This is one of the most beautiful day hikes in Europe.
- Arrive in Valbona in the afternoon and stay at a guesthouse there.
"Leave the car in Theth and hike to Valbona. The next day, take the ferry from Fierze back to Koman, and a bus back to Shkoder to pick up your 4x4. It's the perfect loop!"
Day 3: Ferry & Return
- Take a local minibus (furgon) from Valbona to the Fierze ferry terminal.
- Enjoy the 3-hour Komani Lake Ferry ride – an experience in itself.
- From Koman, take a bus back to Shkodër, where you left your 4x4.
- Drive back to Tirana or continue your adventure south.
